C Girls Code

When we founded C Girls Code, one of the first questions we asked ourselves was what as a group we had to offer others. We thought about workshops, conferences, study groups, etc. However, all these activities would take us a while and we wanted to start with something and get the word out about our organization. Then, Karen said, "Let’s do an Hour of Code", and as always, she made it sound so simple. Indeed, to host an Hour of Code is usually very simple because Code.org already has everything well structured and provides materials. So having an Hour of Code anywhere at any time is really easy, you just need a computer with Internet access and the entertainment starts follows. One of C Girls Code main goals is that members develop new skills, and that starts at the events we organize, such as the Hour of Code. Cuando formamos el grupo de C Girls Code una de las primeras preguntas a resolver era qué podemos hacer como grupo para ofrecer a los demás. Pensamos en talleres, charlas, grupos de estudio, etc. Pero todo esto llevaba tiempo y queríamos empezar ya con algo y darnos a conocer. Fue entonces que Karen nos dijo, “pues hagamos una hora del código”, y como siempre, lo hizo sonar como algo muy sencillo. Y en efecto, suele ser algo muy sencillo, pues la organización Code.org ya tiene todo muy bien estructurado con materiales de apoyo, total que hacer una hora del código en cualquier lugar y momento es muy fácil, solo basta una computadora con conexión a Internet y todo lo demás fluye de manera divertida. En C Girls Code parte del objetivo es que todas las integrantes desarrollemos nuevas habilidades, eso empieza a reflejarse en los eventos que realizamos, como este de la Hora del Código.
